MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Repair work is progressing on the damage caused by flooding at the WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
WVU Medicine President and CEO Albert Wright said some of the operating rooms are expected to be back in operation early next month.
“We’re going to have five of the operating rooms, five of the 10, will be brought back up on July 3 and then about two weeks later we’re bring the other five back up,” Wright said.
The Jefferson Medical Center has been covering a number of procedures usually handled in Berkeley County.
The flooding occurred in an area where some construction was taking place. The hospital system was in the middle of adding a second floor for laboratory space above the existing operating rooms when those first-floor rooms were flooded. Wright said the flood will not slow down the expansion at the hospital.
“I promise it’s not going to slow it down at all. Obviously we have insurance for things like that. It’s going to be a short-term blip,” Wright said.
Wright said there remain plans for a new patient tower at Berkeley Medical Center. He said an announcement could be made about a year from now.
The teams have covered the changes in operations in the last month have been over the top, Wright said.
“I’ve been amazed about how teams (have performed) not only locally but across the health care system,” he said.
