Former WVU quarterback Ben Reed reflects on ‘American Sniper’

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A former West Virginia University quarterback says his role in “American Sniper” as the father of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle is leading to more opportunities inside and outside of Hollywood.

“I don’t think anybody had the expectations of what has happened,” said Ben Reed, who plays Wayne Kyle, the father to Bradley Cooper’s character in the movie.

“It’s a great story about a great soldier and I think it has really hit the audience and everybody takes it to heart. I’m very appreciative and very grateful to be part of it.”

Reed discussed his role in the movie directed by Clint Eastwood on Monday’s MetroNews “Talkline.”

“American Sniper” again led the box office this past weekend after already breaking records for a January opening. The film has earned more than $200 million and is nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Filmed over 42 days, the movie is based on Kyle’s autobiography “American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History.” A total of 160 confirmed kills were credited to Kyle, who received two Silver Stars and five Bronze Stars along with several other medals during his four deployments in Iraq.

Kyle was honorably discharged from the Navy in 2009. In 2013, a former Marine, who is now awaiting trial, allegedly killed him and another man at a shooting range near Chalk Mountain, Texas.

Reed said Eastwood gave him breathing room on the film set, but also offered guidance along the way. “It was just two guys working,” he said. “It was very cool and I really enjoyed my time on the film.”

He said he’s heard positive reviews about the film, especially from veterans.

“It’s a great story, but it also shows the audience how these soldiers have to deal with fighting, protecting our country and then coming back home and trying to fit into civilian life and it’s tough on them,” Reed said.

“Then to have to go back four times, like Chris Kyle did, it takes a toll on families.”

Reed, a native of Oklahoma, was one of several quarterbacks to play for West Virginia between Kevin White in 1984 and Major Harris in 1987. In addition to feature films, his 20-year acting career has included roles in commercials and on television.
