CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin has ordered that all U.S. and State flags on all State-owned facilities will be lowered Friday in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day.
This week is National Police Week. Peace Officers Memorial Day is held annually on May 15 to honor all officers who have died or have been disabled in the line of duty. President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation to begin the tradition in 1962.
“This week, we come together as a state and nation to reflect upon the bravery and sacrifice of our law enforcement officers,” Tomblin said in a release. “We pay tribute to the men and women who laid down their lives to protect our families and our communities and honor all those who are injured in the line of duty. We are forever grateful for their selfless service.”
Last Friday, a ceremony to honor the 204 officers that have been killed in the line of duty in the State of West Virginia was held at the Capitol Complex.
