Former Mount Hope police chief arrested

OAK HILL, W.Va. — A former police chief was charged with DUI and leaving the scene of an accident following an alleged hit-and-run on Friday night.

Thomas Peal of Fayetteville, was accused of hitting another vehicle near Oak Hill’s Summerlee Road and then driving away, according to Fayette County court documents.

Several witnesses to the crash called 911.

Peal reportedly was later found in his vehicle passed out behind the wheel.

Deputies with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department were investigating.

Peal, who posted bond Saturday, had served as Mount Hope’s police chief for almost a decade. He left the department earlier this year.
