3 injured in Kanawha school bus crash

MAMMOTH, W.Va. — Authorities say a Kanawha County school bus was involved in a head-on collision early Wednesday morning.

The crash, between a pick up truck and school bus, took place along Kelleys Creek Road in Mammoth at around 6:30 a.m.

Metro 911 dispatchers said three people were injured, but non of them were children. The school bus driver, a school aid and pick-up truck driver were taken to a local hospital and have since been released.

There is no word on the extent of their injuries.

“They’re a little sore and seem to be in good spirits,” said Kanawha County Schools Transportation Director Brette Fraley. “I saw a picture of the truck that had hit the bus and it was pretty much destroyed.”

Police say they believe the truck driver fell asleep at the wheel as he swerved left over the center lane hitting the bus head-on. Fraley said it appeared the bus was in its correct lane at the time of the accident.

Although these types of situations are difficult to avoid, Fraley said safety should be a top priority for everyone in the community.

“We have to stop for the school buses,” he said. “We have to be cognoscente of the face that they’re out there, that they’re running in the morning and the afternoon. They make multiple runs, multiple stops and as a community, it’s a total effort.”

Kelleys Creek Road has reopened following clean up work from the accident.
