ELKVIEW, W.Va. — A driver was killed in a crash on Interstate 79 south in Kanawha County late Friday night when a pickup truck exited the lane of traffic and slammed into a parked dump truck in a work zone.
The deadly collision happened at 11:38 p.m. just south of the Elkview exit, according to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office.
The driver was ejected from the Chevy Silverado truck and died at the scene. The victim’s name has not been released.
Deputies said the truck then went back into the lane of traffic as was struck by a southbound passenger vehicle. Both the driver and the passenger in that vehicle refused medical treatment, deputies said.
The southbound lanes were closed and traffic detoured for about five hours while the investigation took place. The lanes were reopened at around 6:15 a.m. Saturday.
An investigation into the crash continues.
A DOH contractor has been replacing the decks of the northbound and southbound bridges just south of the Elkview exit for several months.
