SNOWSHOE, W.Va. — Snowshoe Mountain is the final resort in West Virginia and one of the final resorts in the southeast region to remain open during the last week of skiing and snowboarding.
All 40 trails and over 170 acres will be open at the Pocahontas County siteĀ until Sunday.
It was a challenging season for the state’s ski industry. Resorts got a late start due to the milder than normal weather in December.
Shawn Cassell, public relations specialist at Snowshoe, said although they began fully operating in January, it was still a successful season.
“I would call it a short and sweet winter,” he told MetroNews affiliate WMOV Radio in Ravenswood. “It wasn’t the longest season we’ve ever had, but when it got good it was really good.”
With just one week left, Snowshoe decided to touch up the slopes for skiers and snowboarders who want to take advantage of the snow that’s still left.
“It’s all about the guest experience. Did we have enough snow to make it to the 27th? Probably, but we knew we had some thin spots and we were able to address some of those,” Cassell said.
This Saturday and Sunday is West Virginia Free Ski Weekend at Snowshoe.
“Any West Virginia resident can show up with proof of residency and we’ll get you some free tickets,” Cassel said about both days.
There will also be a number activities including tug-of-war along with cardboard box derby racing.
