Flood deaths rise; rescue efforts ongoing in some counties

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — As of Friday morning, there were four flood-related deaths in West Virginia with rescue efforts continue in several counties.

An elderly man didn’t make it out of floodwaters along Jordan Creek Road in the Clendenin area of Kanawha County Thursday night, authorities said. Jordan Creek is a tributary of the Elk River and first responders had a difficult time reaching the area because of high water covering U.S. Route 119.

A woman was found dead in a car along Wills Creek Road early Friday morning. Wills Creek is also in the Clendenin area.

There was a third death in the Clendenin area but details weren’t immediately available Friday morning.

Rescue efforts were continuing Friday morning in northern Kanawha and Greenbrier counties.

An 8-year-old boy died in Big Wheeling Creek in the Elm Grove area of Wheeling Thursday afternoon. The boy slipped into the creek behind the Dairy Queen at about 3:20 p.m. His body was found down the creek at at just before 6 p.m.

Rescue efforts were scheduled to resume Friday morning in Jackson County for a 4-year-old boy who well into fast-moving water near Ravenswood Thursday afternoon.

In what may turn out to be a situation unrelated to flooding, a woman was killed while walking along the West Virginia Turnpike in Kanawha County early Friday morning. The deadly collision occurred at around 1:30 a.m. northbound near the Sharon exit.
