Tow truck driver killed responding to disabled 18-wheeler

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A tow truck driver was killed early Tuesday morning while responding to a disabled tractor-trailer along Interstate 79 in Monongalia County.

According to West Virginia state police, Summers Towing and Repair sent two tow truck drivers to haul away a tractor-trailer that had broken down in the northbound lanes of I-79 near the Westover exit.

The first tow truck hooked up the tractor section of the 18-wheeler. As the second tow truck driver prepared to hook up to the trailer, his truck was struck from behind by another northbound big rig.

The second tow truck driver, identified as Jeff Clovis, was ejected upon impact and died at the scene of the crash.

The rig involved in the crash burst into flames after the impact. The driver was able to escape the cab before flames consumed the tractor.

There were no other injuries reported.
