Putnam County school chief “extremely disappointed” in arrest of former principal

WINFIELD, W.Va. — Putnam County School Superintendent John Hudson said he’ll make a recommendation in the near future to the Putnam County Board of Education on what the future employment status should be of Buffalo High School teacher Brad Knell.

Brad Knell was arrested on a DUI charge Thursday.

Knell was arrested on a DUI charge Thursday. He was found passed out behind the wheel of his vehicle in the drive-through lane of First Sentry Bank in Nitro, according to Putnam County deputies.

Knell used to be the principal at Poca High School but resigned last year following criminal charges alleging he used a basketball booster debit card for his own benefit. He later entered a plea to a reduced charge. The school board rehired him this past Monday for a teaching position at Buffalo High School.

Hudson told MetroNews Friday he was “extremely disappointed” in Knell’s alleged conduct.

“Especially in light of Mr. Knell’s recent reemployment in the school system that were subject to several contingencies that were put in place,” Hudson said.

Hudson wouldn’t say if he’ll recommend Knell be fired. He did say he’ll make a recommendation at a meeting of the board in the near future.

“I will handle this situation pursuant to all applicable personnel laws,” Hudson said.

Until Hudson’s recommendation, Knell won’t be allowed on any school property in Putnam County.

“I understand the concerns that the concerns that have been and will be expressed by the community. Any action taken will be in the best interest of the school system, and the Board shares the same expectations,” Hudson said.

Knell told a Putnam County deputy he had two beers. His blood alcohol level was .088 above the legal limit of .08.
