HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. — The Jefferson County Convention and Visitors Bureau held a ground breaking ceremony at the Jefferson County West Virginia Welcome Center Monday afternoon.
The center is adding an expansion that will feature improvements to the entrance, larger spaces for exhibits and technology and new bathrooms.
U.S. Sen. Shelly Moore Capito, R-W.Va., has been a driving force behind this project for the Jefferson County CVB. She said the improvements to the Welcome Center will stand out to visitors to the state.
“What we represent here at this visitors bureau is the kind of West Virginia that is going to have people come back,” Capito said.
Christian Asam, President of the Jefferson County CVB said the board appreciates the support from both Sen. Capito and Sen. Joe Machin, D-W.Va., who was also in attendance.
“They have both been huge supporters of tourism in out county. As they said, if you’re coming through D.C. or Baltimore, this is where you drive thru,” Asam said. “We’re the entry way to West Virginia and they know that. They realize that Jefferson County is a great place for tourist.”
Asam estimated that the expansions to the Welcome Center should be completed by late spring or early summer.
