MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Eight days after learning his scholarship offer was pulled by West Virginia coaches, University High receiver/safety Amir Richardson committed to Marshall on Saturday.
Richardson visited with Thundering Herd coach Doc Holliday and assistants on Thursday and said they would allow him to play his more prominent position.
“The visit went well — the town is similar to Morgantown in many ways,” he said. “I met a lot of the players and really felt at home with the coaching staff. Coach Holliday was very caring after my situation with WVU went down and gave me a opportunity to play the position I wanted to at the Division-I level. They are bringing me in as an X-receiver and I’ve always wanted to play receiver. Nobody thought I could do it other than Georgia Tech.”
West Virginia offered Richardson as a linebacker/safety when Richardson committed in July. But coach Dana Holgorsen told Richardson last week that he was not a Division I defender and the Mountaineers already had too many receivers.
That’s when Marshall offensive coordinator Tim Cramsey reached out.
“I got a call from coach Cramsey less than two hours after I lost my offer from WVU,” Richardson said. “Marshall shows the most genuine love.”
Richardson is the second receiver committed to the Thundering Herd in the class of 2019, the other is Jeremy Smith of Savannah, Ga.
Richardson plans to sign his Letter of Intent on Wednesday during the early signing period.
