Bluefield State College hires interim president

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — A new interim president has been chosen to lead the troubled Bluefield State College.

The college’s Board of Governors announced Thursday the selection of Dr. Robin Capehart for the position. Capehart served as state Secretary of Tax and Revenue from 1996 to 2000, and later became president of West Liberty University, where he was the subject of scrutiny for the operation of his film production company in 2015.

Capehart admitted to an ethics violation for hiring an employee and then soliciting her to be the manager and executive producer of his company, Flyover Films, and paid fines totaling $10,000 as part of a settlement agreement with the West Virginia Ethics Commission.

After resigning from WLU, Capehart formed a higher education consulting firm and began working in 2018 as counsel to the West Virginia Senate Finance Committee.

Bluefield State College president Marsha Krotseng stepped down in December amid criticism over recruiting efforts, as the college continued to experience a sharp decline in student enrollment during her tenure. She continues to work in an advisory capacity for the university.

Board of Governors Chairman Garry Moore said the search for a new president could take several months or longer. Provost Dr. Ted Lewis has been serving as acting president since Krotseng’s resignation.
