Mountaineer baseball standout Jedd Gyorko will travel to Boston Thursday to take part in Cape Cod League All-Star game festivities. Gyorko will start at third base for the East squad in the Cape Cod League All-Star game at Fenway Park.
Prior to the game on Thursday, Gyorko will be one of six players who will take part in a homerun derby at Fenway.
"I’m not sure I have the power to go over the (Green) Monster, Gyorko told us Tuesday. But it should be fun. I am certainly going to give it my best shot. I will go out and try to have some fun, that’s the main thing."
Gyorko is fourth in the Cape in hitting at .324. His total of four homers is among the league leaders despite the fact that Gyorko missed the first two weeks of the season while trying out for Team USA.
"The competition is great," Gyorko said. "That is really what I wanted to get up here and find out. I wanted to find out where I stood among the best (college) players in the nation."
Gyorko will return to WVU for his junior season prior to becoming elidible for baseball’s entry draft next summer.
The Cape Cod League All-Star game will be televised by the New England Sports Network (NESN) Wednesday starting at 7 p.m.
We will have more with Gyorko during Tuesday night’s edition of the MetroNews Sportsline. Also on the show Tuesday will be former Mountaineer catcher David Carpenter. The Fairmont native is playing pro ball in the Cardinals organization. The Cardinals recently moved Carpenter from catcher to pitcher.
