The West Virginia DNR has compiled the overall statistics from the recently completed fall hunting seasons in West Virginia. The collection of check tags reveals the overall number of deer killed in all of the combined seasons fell three percent below the level of 2011.
Hunters killed 131,144 whitetail deer during the various seasons. During 2011, hunters killed an overall total of 135,696 deer.
Hunters killed 56,658 bucks during the two week season for buck hunting.
A total of 45,169 antlerless deer were killed during the various seasons in which taking a doe was legal. Some counties included a two week concurrent season with the buck season and statewide hunters enjoyed a split season for regular antlerless deer hunting.
Muzzleloader season yielded a harvest of 5,046 deer–well off the 2011 numbers. It was the first year the season dates for muzzleloader season were changed and came earlier in the year.
Bow hunters killed 24,571 deer which was a ten-percent reduction from the 2011 levels. Biologist say the archery harvest is directly tied to an above average acorn crop in West Virginia.
