Herd wins series against Houston

CHARLESTON. W.Va. — Marshall took two of three from No. 19 Houston over the weekend at Appalachian Power Park improving to 13-18 overall and 3-3 in Conference USA.

Following a wild 19-13 victory in the series opener, Marshall got another masterful performance from Aaron Blair in a 4-0 win Saturday. Houston salvaged the Sunday finale with a 9-1 win.

Saturday afternoon, Blair allowed just two hits over eight innings and retired 14 straight Houston hitters at one point.  Marshall’s ace struck out 11, five of whom went down looking.

Marshall got run in the bottom of the second inning on a Aaron Bossi two-out, RBI single.  The Herd tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth.

In Houston’s win Sunday, Justin Montemayor blasted a three-run homer to right field in the fourth as Houston took control.

Marshall’s lone run came in the fifth on a groundout by Gray Stafford.

Marshall has a game at Ohio State on Wednesday before battling Southern Miss in a league tilt next weekend.
