The 2013 high school football season enters into week number five this weekend and after play on Saturday night, 73% of the 117 high school football teams in WV will have played 50% of their regular season schedule. It seems as if each year the high school football season flies by and once again that is true for this year.
So, halfway into the season I thought it would be interesting to check and see just how prolific the offense and defense has been so far in 2013. When you look at each class separately, we find Class AA teams have given up more points than they have scored and the smallest margin between points scored and points allowed belongs to the Class AAA field where the big school teams have scored just 286 points more than they have given up. Heading into week number five, the numbers break down like this:
CLASS AAA: Points Scored – 4,434 Points Allowed – 4,148
CLASS AA: Points Scored – 3,451 Points Allowed – 3,777
CLASS A: Points Scored – 3,533 Points Allowed – 3,183
Now breaking it down a little farther, we find the leaders in each class:
CLASS AAA:
Most Points Scored – Morgantown (4-0): 224 – 56 ppg
Least Points Given Up – Morgantown (4-0): 21 – 5.25 ppg
Huntington (4-0): 21 – 5.25 ppg
CLASS AA:
Most Points Scored – Sissonville (4-0): 162 – 40.5 ppg
Least Points Given Up – Wayne (3-0): 13 – 4.3 ppg
CLASS A:
Most Points Scored – Wahama (3-1): 181 – 45.25 ppg
Least Points Given Up – Greenbrier West (4-0): 19 – 4.75 ppg
What does all of the above mean at this halfway point of the season? Honestly about as much as the first set of rankings released last week by the WVSSAC…..not a whole lot! But, it is fun to compare teams around the state to see which offense and defense is really clicking with about five games to go.
Coming up this weekend, we have several games that certainly are worth the price of a ticket! Here are just a few that jump off the wvmetronews.com score sheet:
