Man killed in Wheeling hit and run

WHEELING, W.Va. – There are a lot of unanswered questions after a Wheeling man was killed in a hit and run accident near I-70 Tuesday evening.

Wheeling Deputy Chief Martin Kimball said they got the call around 8 p.m.

“We had a passerby who saw a white male laying in the middle of the road. He was actually a local physician who stopped and administered first aid to the subject and called 911,” according to Kimball.

Police said Peter Young, 34, was found at the bottom of the Washington Ave. I-70 westbound on-ramp.

“At the time he was alert and coherent and stated he believed he’d been hit by a Ford pick-up truck,” explained Kimball.

Young was unable to provide any other details and was rushed to the Ohio Valley Medical Center for a CAT scan. Young’s condition began to deteriorate and as he was being taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown he suffered a heart attack and died.

Kimball said investigators can’t figure out why Young was near that interstate on-ramp at that time of the evening. The chief deputy is hoping someone saw something that might help their investigation.

“We’re going to obviously depend on any possible witnesses who may have seen something and don’t realize they saw something and perhaps be able to provide us with some further information and some leads we may be able to follow up on,” said Kimball.

With little to go on, Kimball believes this will be a very difficult case to solve.
