Backyard Brawl coming to Huntington; Marshall to play Pitt

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.— Marshall has announced another home-and-home series with an ACC opponent. Athletics Director Mike Hamrick announced Tuesday Marshall play Pitt in 2016 and 2020.

The Herd will travel to the University of Pittsburgh on Oct. 1, 2016 and the Panthers will make the return trip to Huntington on Sept. 26, 2020.

“The old Backyard Brawl is back but it is coming to Huntington instead of Morgantown,” said coach Doc Holliday on Metronews Talkline with Hoppy Kercheval.

Marshall’s 2016 non-conference schedule now consists of home games with Louisville and Akron and a road trip to Pittsburgh.

“I’m excited about it. It’s a great game for us and all our fans can get to Pittsburgh and see that game that is close to us,” said Holliday.

The deal is the third home-and-home series Hamrick has signed with an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent. Louisville is scheduled to come to Huntington in 2016 and N.C. State is on the schedule for 2017 and 2018.

“Since arriving here in 2009, my goal has been to bring quality nationally-recognized programs on a home-and-home basis to Huntington,” said Hamrick. “The addition of Pitt is just another step in that process. Our Thundering Herd fans are loyal and deserve to see quality programs in Joan C. Edwards Stadium. Also, these games are regionally-based, which will allow our fans to travel to see Marshall play.”

Hamrick also has renewed series with Ohio (home in 2019, away in 2020), East Carolina (away in 2020, home in 2021) and will begin a series with Navy (away in 2021, home in 2022).

Mike Hamrick has done a tremendous job of getting home-and-home series,” said Holliday. “We’re not standing still, we’re moving forward. We’re excited.”
