CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state Department of Administration is looking for community organizations wanting to help keep the state Capitol complex looking beautiful next year.
The “Adopt-A-Garden” program will have different groups tending to one of 16 different flower beds on the over 50-acre campus that will have a marker recognizing the caretakers.
“We designed and developed this program in an effort to encourage public and community involvement in beautifying our beautiful state Capitol complex,” Diane Holley-Brown, communication director with the Department of Administration said.
The department is taking applications, which will be looked over by Capitol Grounds Manager John Cummings.
Holley-Brown said the program is a win-win for those wishing to take up a community project and for their groundskeepers.
“This will also provide our current staff the ability to work on other things and again to provide the community to play a part in keeping our campus beautiful.”
However, she said the groups will not be completely on their own as there will be oversight.
“We’ll be purchasing the flowers and assisting the organizations with the design and, of course, we’ll be making sure that everything is kept to the level of expectations that we have with our own staff,” she said.
Though they recognize there are many opportunities to serve out in the community, they wanted to provide another outlet at a location of statewide significance.
“I know a lot of times organizations are looking for a community project to work on, so we hope that they’ll consider this project,” Holley-Brown said.
