SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — Not all parts of West Virginia will have to wait to see early alcohol sales on Sunday.
The so called Brunch Bill that passed in the legislature this year requires a county-by-county vote before alcohol can be sold at 10:00 Sunday mornings at restaurants, private clubs and wineries.
CEO of the Jefferson County CVB Annette Gavin says Shepherdstown found a way around that through the Municipal Home Rule Pilot Project
“In their application, one of the things they asked for was early sales Sunday,” Gavin said during Panhandle Live with Hans Fogle.
Gavin said the Shepherdstown City Council will now need to enact an ordinance to make the change for businesses within the city limits.
That has inspired other home rule cities across the state, but Gavin said it is a good thing.
“Everybody’s already calling going ‘Hey, we have home rule. Can we get that?’” Gavin said.
Gavin said early Sunday sales in cities across the state is a start.
“If we can start seeing that history, that’s going to be phenomenal to help us boost the county getting it passed when it comes to that November ballot,” Gavin said.
Gavin said Shephersdtown’s application has been accepted and they are a home rule city.
No word on when such an ordinance might be passed.
