Justice picks Charleston insurance VP to serve as insurance commissioner

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Gov. Jim Justice announced Tuesday Allan McVey will serve as the next state insurance commissioner.

McVey is the vice president and agency manager for BB&T-Carson Insurance Services in Charleston, and has 48 years of experience in the insurance industry. This includes working with the West Virginia Workers Compensation Fund as a medical claims examiner.

“He’s served in many leadership positions throughout his career and is dedicated to giving back to his profession as well as his community,” Justice said in a statement.

“I believe I can bring my experience in the industry to serve as commissioner, not only in the regulatory functions of the agency, but also working to promote and support a strong and healthy insurance market that our citizens and insurers can truly rely on,” McVey said.

In addition to his insurance work, he serves as board chairman for both the Charleston-Kanawha Housing Authority and Highland Hospital Board. He also volunteers as a public address announcer for the St. Albans High School and West Virginia State University basketball games, as well the state High School Basketball Tournament.

Andrew Pauley, general counsel for the commission, will continue serving as acting commissioner until McVey takes office April 1.
