State Treasurer’s office holding online auction

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia State Treasurer’s office is currently holding an online auction for unclaimed items.

The office gathers numerous items from police departments across the state. These units collect objects from abandoned safe deposit boxes and law enforcement seizures, and are sold either at live auctions or online.

“We certainly hope Mountain State residents will take a look at what is up for bid,” Treasurer John Perdue said. “It’s so easy to get great deals on collectibles without ever leaving your house.”

Some of the items up for bid include an 1886 $5 coin, a 14-karat, 1937 Seton Hall University class ring and 300 United States dimes.

According to a statement, the office has acquired more than $530,000 in auction sales since the 2012 fiscal year.

Funds raised from the auction will go toward the respective police agency that submitted the items. If the property came from a safe deposit box, the proceeds will go to the box’s owner once the office contacts the person.

The auction ends March 2. For more information, visit www.wvtreasury.com and click on “Unclaimed Property.”
