AARP, MetroNews partner again for Scholar Athlete of the Week

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — AARP West Virginia and the MetroNews Radio Network are again partnering to recognize some of the Mountain State’s best and brightest student athletes through the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week awards program.

This statewide honor, presented each week during the fall sports season on the popular MetroNews High School GameNight program, recognizes high school student athletes for outstanding achievements in athletics, the classroom and in communities across West Virginia.

Student athletes in grades 11 and 12, with a minimum 3.0 grade point average, are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement.

Since the program’s inception in 2013, a total of 54 student athletes representing the following West Virginia high schools have received the statewide honor: Berkeley Springs, Braxton County, Buckhannon-Upshur, Buffalo, Cabell Midland, Capital, Charleston Catholic, Notre Dame, Clay-Battelle, Doddridge County, Elkins, Fairmont Senior, George Washington, Gilmer County, Greenbrier East, Greenbrier West, Hampshire, Independence, Lewis County, Lincoln, Lincoln County, Logan, Magnolia, Martinsburg, Musselman, North Marion, Oak Glen, Parkersburg, Parkersburg South, Petersburg, Point Pleasant, Preston, Ravenswood, Ripley, Riverside, Robert C. Byrd, Tucker County, University, Washington, Wayne, Wheeling Central, Wheeling Park, Winfield, and Woodrow Wilson.

“AARP is proud to shine a spotlight on some of our state’s high achieving student athletes who invest countless hours in the classroom and the athletic arena, all while making a commitment to give back to their communities through volunteer service,” said Gaylene Miller, AARP West Virginia State Director.

“MetroNews Sports is excited to celebrate the fifth anniversary of this partnership with AARP West Virginia, recognizing the outstanding achievements of our state’s finest student athletes each week,” said Fred Persinger, affiliate relations director for the West Virginia MetroNews Radio Network.

MetroNews High School GameNight, hosted by Fred Persinger and Dave Jecklin, is heard live on nearly 40 MetroNews Network radio affiliates across West Virginia, 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night during the high school football season. The show premieres for the 2017 season on August 25.
