9-year-old caught driving pickup truck in Morgan County

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. — A 9-year-old boy was found behind the wheel of a full-size pickup truck near Berkeley Springs Monday.

“In my nearly 40 years this is the youngest I’ve seen,” Morgan County Sheriff K.C. Bohrer told MetroNews affiliate WEPM. Typically you might have double digits, teens, but 9-year-old is kind of the exception.”

Bohrer said they received a report of a minor driving the vehicle on Valley Road south came in at about 2:30 morning.

The boy allegedly took the truck from his grandparents home and driven to Berkeley Springs, a distance of 12 to 15 miles according to Bohrer.

A deputy attempted to stop the pickup but it struck a parked vehicle.

The driver then put the truck in reverse and it struck the deputy’s police cruiser.

The boy was taken into custody and later released to his parents.

No one was injured.

Charges are likely to be brought after consultation with the prosecuting attorney.
