Hoover’s Missy Smith MaxPreps National Softball Coach of the Year

CLENDENIN, W.Va. — Herbert Hoover softball coach Missy Smith has been named by MaxPreps as its National Softball Coach of the Year.

Smith led Herbert Hoover to a perfect 33-0 record this past season and a second straight Class AA state championship.

“An unbeaten season can only be appreciated when the season is over,” Smith said in the release. “I knew we would be good, returning all but three players from our 2017 state title team.”

Overall, Herbert Hoover hit .407 as a team and scored 273 runs, giving up just 25 runs.

West Virginia’s Gatorade Player of the Year Delani Buckner, a sophomore, helped lead the Huskies’ pitching staff that posted an overall 0.58 ERA, finishing with a combined 338 strikeouts.

“This team is really special, they’ve been playing together since they were 6, 7, 8 years old all together as a unit,” Smith said. “Our girls played for each other and built relationships for their entire lives.”
