High School Football is like a lot of other great things…..it just gets better with age! Last week marked week #4 of the 2018 season and we had some really great games!
Now for starters, the week itself was unlike anything I can remember! With the threat of Hurricane Florence influencing the weather in WV last week, a total of 20 games were played on nights whose spelling did not begin with an “F” or “S”! In anticipation of a lot of rain on Friday and Saturday, which thankfully did not appear, several schools opted to play their games earlier in the week. We had one high school game played on Wednesday night last week and 19 others played on Thursday night. Of those 19 Thursday night games, there were no real upsets however, the final score of one game did cause a lot of head turning! In a game that was featured live on radio and on television, the #2 ranked Polar Bears of Fairmont Senior welcomed the #3 ranked Indians of Bridgeport and showed no mercy as they rolled past the young men from Harrison County by a final of 45-14! It marked the 3rd win in a row for Fairmont Senior over Bridgeport and the Polar Bears starting quarterback, Connor Neal, had a near flawless game. The senior signal caller completed 21 of 26 passes for 395 yards and 4 touchdowns! With starters Caleb Walker and Breeden Gilbert on the sidelines with injuries, Rhett Heston also stepped up with a big game. In another game last week where fans really got their moneys worth, Mingo Central lost a 33-12 lead in the fourth quarter as Sissonville rallied for 24 unanswered points only to see the Miners recover on a Daylin Goad-to-Devin Hatfield touchdown connection in the final minute to escape with a win.
What can we look for in week #5? Well, for starters in Class AAA, the Knights of Cabell Midland will look to rebound from a 40-10 set back last week at the hands of the Hurricane Redskins as they to Laidley Field to take on the undefeated Capital Cougars! So far this season, Capital has outscored their first four opponents 154 to 66! In Class AA, there are a bevy of great games on the schedule as undefeated Fairmont Senior will host Class AAA University and the Hawks will be trying to rebound from a heart breaking loss last Friday night to Wheeling Park. The Bridgeport Indians (3-1) will hope to play better than they did last Thursday night when they host (3-1) Robert C. Byrd whose only loss is to those same Polar Bears who defeated the Flying Eagles back in week #1 by a final of 46-20! Also in Class AA this week, (3-1) Mingo Central is at (4-0) Poca and maybe the best game this week in Class AA will take place in Nicholas County when the (4-0) Red Devils of Oak Hill travel to Summersville to battle the (4-0) Grizzlies! In Class A, the undefeated Fayetteville Pirates (4-0) will make the long trip to Wheeling to battle the (3-0) Maroon Knights of Wheeling Central Catholic, while (3-0) Doddridge County visits (3-1) Ritchie County and (3-1) Madonna heads to Cameron to tangle with the undefeated Dragons!
A couple of other notes of interest this week, due to a scheduling snafu, the General of Montcalm will be playing two games in one week and three games in eight days beginning this Friday, 9/21 when they host Hurley, Virginia followed by a 2½ hour bus ride next Tuesday, 9/25 to New Castle, Virginia to take on Craig County and still yet another 2½ bus ride next Friday, 9/28 to Van to tangle with the Bulldogs! And, a BIG congratulations go out to the Hundred Hornets who defeated Hannan last Saturday night to capture their first high school football victory since 2010! I’ll bet they are still having a party in Wetzel County!
Don’t forget to join Dave Jecklin and me for GAMENIGHT this Friday night from 9:30 to Midnight for all the scores of all the games, plus interviews with players and coaches! And, you can check out the live video of the show every Friday night @wvmetronews.com.
