Cooper: Police have lead in Charleston double-murder

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Police have a lead in a double murder investigation in Charleston.

Charleston Police Department Chief Steve Cooper

“We do have a lead. Yesterday morning we weren’t sure what we had and now we know,” Charleston Police Chief Steve Cooper said during an appearance Thursday on 580 Live on 580 WCHS with Charleston Mayor Danny Jones.

Kenneth Campbell, 50, and Jenni Chesney, 47, both of 3921 West Washington Street, died of gunshot wounds. Their bodies were found by an acquaintance in the apartment they shared.

Cooper would not elaborate Thursday morning on the lead but did strongly hint the murders were not random.

“Most of our homicides occur between people who know one another. Typically, the victims are involved in some high-risk behavior,” Cooper said.

There was an overdose death in recent weeks at the same address.

“There were lots of needles found in that house,” Cooper said.

The murders marked the fifth and sixth in the Capital City this year.
