Hamilton helps Grizzlies outlast Tucker County

GLENVILLE, W.Va. — Behind 34 points and 16 rebounds from senior center Anna Hamilton, the Nicholas County girls basketball team earned a quality 59-50 victory against Tucker County on Wednesday in the IOGA Classic at the Waco Center.

The Grizzlies (2-2) and Mountain Lions (1-2) were in a tightly contested affair throughout, with the game tied at 17 after one quarter and Nicholas County holding a 31-28 halftime lead. Nicholas maintained the three-point advantage in the third and held a 42-39 lead ahead of the game’s final 8 minutes.

But the Grizzlies separated themselves in the fourth, getting a putback by Hamilton, followed by a 3-pointer off the wing from Emily Parker that stretched the advantage to 49-41 with 5:15 to play.

Tucker County got a layup by Kelcee James in response, but Taylor Brown’s triple stretched the Nicholas County lead to nine.

Aliyah Plum’s stickback made it a seven-point game, but the Mountain Lions got no closer. Instead, Hamilton scored inside, and after a McKinley Murphy three-point play pulled Tucker to within 55-48, Hamilton made another basket from close range.

Hamilton finished the contest with a layup in the final seconds for her 12th field goal in 18 attempts.

Parker added three 3s and 11 points in the win.

Murphy led the Mountain Lions with 12 points, while Katie Surguy scored 11 in defeat.
