CSX announces layoffs at Kentucky shop near Huntington

RUSSELL, Ky. — CSX announced major layoffs at its Russell, Kentucky operation near Huntington Friday.

The railroad company informed workers that it’s closing the Russell Locomotive Shop. CSX immediately laid off 113 workers.

A CSX spokesperson told WSAZ Television it’s been reviewing the Russell operation for several months.

“Over the past three years, the volume of work performed at the Russell Locomotive Shop has declined substantially, through no fault of the employees who work there. CSX is grateful for the contributions of its many employees and has offered to work with labor officials to minimize the effects of this closure on employees and their families,” the spokesman said.

The laid off workers will receive at least 60 days of regular pay and benefits. They also will be covered by the terms of their collective bargaining agreement.

The Russell yard is about 20 miles from Huntington. CSX closed its administrative office building in Huntington in 2016, impacting more than 100 workers. The company laid off 70 workers at the Huntington Locomotive Shop in 2017.
