Arrest made in 4-month Ohio County murder probe

WHEELING, W.Va. — An Ohio County teenager is in the Northern Regional Jail without bail after being arrested Wednesday night in connection with a January shooting death.

Crandall Senkbeil

Crandall Senkbeil, 18, is charged with first degree murder. He allegedly killed his friend Caleb Smail.

Smail, 19, was shot Jan. 23 in a residence located along Boone and Hedges Road. His death was ruled a homicide two days later.

According to a criminal complaint, Senkbeil and Smail exchanged a number of text messages about a possible deal for marijuana. The complaint also said a friend of both men came forward and told investigators he received a call from Senkbeil the night of the shooting that he had accidentally shot Smail.

Authorities also allege Senkbeil took a lock box full of cash from the residence from where the shooting occurred.
