BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. — The man accused of murdering a 15 year-old girl in May is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Wednesday in Morgan County Magistrate Court.
Andy McCauley Jr, 41, waived the right to his original preliminary hearing, scheduled for May 24.
McCauley was taken into custody by state police on May 16 hours after the body of 15-year-old Riley Crossman of Berkeley Springs was found. Crossman had been missing since the early morning hours of May 8.
Officers from the Division of Natural Resources, assisting with the community-wide search, found Crossman’s decomposed body on an embankment near the 5500 block of Tuscarora Pike in Berkeley County, about five miles from Interstate 81.
A criminal complaint detailed the process that led investigators to charge McCauley with the crime.
Authorities used cadaver dogs to pick up the scent of a body in McCauley’s work truck. They also spotted drywall mud in the pickup truck bed, which matched drywall found on Crossman’s body.
Magistrate Kermit Ambrose will preside over the case, which is scheduled for 2 Wednesday afternoon in Morgan County Magistrate Court.
Authorities have not released Crossman’s cause of death.
