WAYNESBURG, Pa. — Benjamin Jackson scored six touchdowns as West Greene, Pa. rolled to a 61-20 win over Cameron Monday night in the season opener for both teams.
The game was scheduled on a Monday, the first day of official competition on the WVSSAC calendar, to accommodate a two-game week for the Pioneers. They will host Bentworth on Friday night.
Jackson scored five times in the first half on runs of 11, 56, 63, 4 and 6 yards. The senior added a 43-yard scoring tote midway through the third quarter to cap his night’s work.
Cameron fell behind 13-0 in the first quarter before responding through the air. Jessop Broughton hit Isaac Ball on a 64-yard scoring strike to cut the deficit to 13-6. But the Pioneers scored four more touchdowns in the first half to take a 40-6 halftime lead.
The Dragons scored twice in the second half on a 50-yard touchdown run from Garrett Scott and a 12-yard pass from Broughton to Cole O’Neil.
Cameron finished 11-1 in 2018, advancing to the Class A quarterfinals. But the Dragons are a much younger team this fall, and they fielded just 24 players for this game. This marked just their second regular season loss since the last game of the 2015 season. They went 29-1 over the last three regular seasons.
“With a new team and three seniors, this is not the start we wanted,” said new Cameron head coach Tim Brown. “We played a good team and hopefully we will learn from this because you can’t run from what happens on the football field.”
The Dragons will have eleven days to prepare for their home opener against Hundred on September 6th.
“These kids stayed together. They didn’t get negative with each other. They showed a lot of class in a bad situation.”
