Labor leaders mark holiday weekend with Marion County picnic

MANNINGTON, W.Va. — The Marion County Central Labor Council’s annual Labor Day Picnic is scheduled for this Sunday, and will include food, entertainment and appearances by prominent leaders.

U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va; United Mine Workers of American president Cecil Roberts; UMWA secretary-treasurer Levi Allen; West Virginia Democratic Party chairwoman Belinda Biafore; and 91-year old “Rosie the Riveter” Anna Hess are all scheduled to attend.

“I am honored to attend this celebration and pay tribute to the contributions and achievements of West Virginia workers,” Biafore said. “Labor Day is a time to reflect on the hard work and dedication of our brothers and sisters that paved the way for us today. The benefits and rights we have today were not handed to America’s working men and women, they were fought for by those who will join together here and those celebrating Labor Day across the country.”

Marion County AFL-CIO president Mark Dorsey said Labor Day is a time to remember the labor leaders who advocated for better working conditions across the country.

“It’s time to honor the victories of those who came before us and also preparing for the fights ahead,” he added

The picnic will also offer door prizes, including a .30-caliber rifle with a scope.

The free event will be held at Hough Park in Mannington and is open to the public. The picnic begins at noon.
