MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Morgantown City Council members heard from the Human Rights Commission on Tuesday about proposed changes to the city’s plan on inclusion.
The council will vote on a new policy relating to volunteers and employees, as well as adopt an official mission statement.
The goal of the plan is to transform the make up the city workforce and volunteers to reflect the diversity of the city.
“What the Strategic Plan for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion does enable the city to do is to establish a foundation for constructive diversity and equity in its employees and volunteers,” Human Rights Commission member Don Spencer said.
Commission member Jan Derry said the city has been a leader in diversity, which is something the commission wants to continue.
“Equity is based on transparent fairness in employment practices, and inclusion is something that people value and want to work for,” he said.
The plan also includes diversity management practices to develop diversity.
“We’ve looked at several research projects that have measured what has happened in other cities, what things they have done to create and sustain, protect and nurture the diversity so it can allow the creativity and effectiveness to blossom,” Spencer noted.
City council will vote on the proposal at its Oct. 1 meeting.
