2019 Is The Year of the Mighty Offenses!

How many times have we all heard, “Defense wins Championships”!  And, while that might still be proven true, so far in 2019, it’s the offense that’s doing the damage!

Take for example the following numbers that will prove my theory to be true….at least through the first half of this season.  In all three classes, let’s just look at the top three teams!  In Class AAA, the Martinsburg Bulldogs are currently undefeated at 5-0 and have outscored their opponents 274-32, or an average per game score of 55-6!  The Knights of Cabell Midland are also 5-0 and have outscored their opponents 185-84, a per game average of 37-17.  And, the Patriots of Parkersburg South, also 5-0, have outscored their first five opponents 250-84, a per game average of 50-17!  Offense Wins!

In Class AA, when you look at the top three teams, the offensive numbers don’t lie!  Fairmont Senior, currently (5-0) have outscored their first five opponents 243-41, a per game winning margin of 47-8!  The Poca Dots, (5-0), have outscored their first five opponents 239-57, a per game average of 48-11.  And, the Keyser Golden Tornado really proves my theory to be true because through their first five games they are (5-0) and have outscored their opponents 286-7, a per game average of 57-1.4, and they have four straight shutouts!!  So, maybe the defense for Keyser has been just as good as the offense.

In Class A, the Pendleton County Wildcats are (4-0) and have outscored their opponents 131-43, a per game average of 33-11.  The Bulldogs of Doddridge County are also (4-0) and have outscored their first four opponents 183-52, an average of 46-13 per game and even though the Maroon Knights of Wheeling Central Catholic have lost one game and currently sit at (4-1), they have still outscored their first five opponents 160-90, a per game average of 32-18!

Now when you add all the scores of the top nine teams that are listed above, you find the total number of points scored to be 1,951 and the number of points allowed 490….that is a per game average score of 45-11!

So, the above formula would suggest in order to be successful, you best be able to put a lot of points on the scoreboard, or it could be most teams are just concerned with scoring more points and not worrying about the defensive side of the ball.  I have a feeling however, that just might change the deeper we go into the 2019 season.

Some key games coming up this weekend, will find Riverside (3-1) at Cabell Midland (5-0) – Parkersburg South (5-0) at Huntington (3-1) – Capital (3-2) at Spring Valley (4-1) – Robert C. Byrd (3-2) at Lewis County (3-1) – Bridgeport (4-1) at North Marion (4-1) – Sissonville ((4-1) at Poca (5-0) – Bluefield (3-1) at Point Pleasant (1-1) and Williamstown (4-1) at St. Marys (3-1)!

Don’t forget to get out and attend a high school game in your area and then after the game tune in to GAMENIGHT where Dave Jecklin and I will have all the scores of the all the games being played this Friday night.  GAMENIGHT can be heard on over 40 great radio stations around the state and the audio and video can be viewed at www.wvmetronews.com!

Talk with you Friday night!!
