Troopers break up skimmer operation in Monongalia County

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — State police say they have shut down a credit card skimming operation in Monongalia County.

Troopers said the investigation began after citizens reported large sums of money missing from their bank accounts.

“Information from the skimmer has downloaded via Bluetooth and have cloned the credit cards and used those at various locations throughout Monongalia County and obtained a significant amount of money,” Sgt. Devin Barger told MetroNews affiliate WAJR Radio in Morgantown Tuesday afternoon.

Reports indicate at least two people are in custody in the Pittsburgh area and a large amount of cash has been recovered by authorities. Names of those apprehended were not immediately available.

Barger said the suspects rented a car in Monongalia County and drove to the Pittsburgh. Investigators tracked purchases in real-time to catch the suspects when they returned the rental car.

Troopers heard from several residents, Barger said.

Police said all the electronic equipment used with the exception of the skimmer have been recovered.
