Playoff Roundup: Cabell Midland, Fairmont Senior stay unbeaten; Spring Valley also moving on

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Five teams secured spots in a semifinal Friday night, while seven more will do so on Saturday.

In addition to Bluefield’s victory over Keyser and Williamstown’s win at Greenbrier West, Cabell Midland and Spring Valley both advanced in Class AAA, while defending AA champion Fairmont Senior is also moving on.

A closer look at Friday’s action.

Knights get by GW to stay unbeaten

Showing the resiliency it has displayed since an 0-2 start, Class AAA No. 7 George Washington hung tough, but was eliminated with a 28-18 loss at No. 2 Cabell Midland.

The Knights got two fourth-quarter touchdown runs from J.J. Roberts, the first of which was from 15 yards and gave Cabell Midland a 21-10 lead with 9:15 to play.

But R.T. Alexander found Luke Grimm for a 24-yard TD pass, and Alexander connected with Alex Mazelon on the two-point pass to bring the Patriots (8-4) to within 21-18 with 7:24 remaining.

Roberts’ 3-yard TD run with 1:32 to play sealed the win for Cabell Midland, which will bring a 12-0 record into next week’s semifinal against Spring Valley.

Jackson Fetty and Roberts had first-half touchdown runs of 72 and 62 yards, respectively, in the win.

Mazelon hauled in a 19-yard touchdown pass from Alexander for the game’s first score.

Roberts rushed for 187 yards.

Timberwolves blank Capital for 2nd time this season

Class AAA No. 3 Spring Valley came up with four interceptions and scored 23 second-half points to pull away from No. 11 Capital, 30-0.

It marked the second time this season the Timberwolves (11-1) have shut out the Cougars, who were limited to 166 total yards in defeat.

Luke Christopher rushed for a pair of touchdowns and 68 yards in the win, while Brody Brumfield scored on a 68-yard run and rushed for a team-high 117 yards.

Nate Ellis’ 7-yard run accounted for the Timberwolves’ only other touchdown.

Capital finished 6-6 overall.

Polar Bears pick up 26th consecutive win, eliminate Frankfort

One week after suffering through defensive struggles in a win over Winfield, Class AA No. 1 Fairmont Senior held No. 8 Frankfort scoreless until the fourth quarter of a 31-7 win at East-West Stadium.

The Polar Bears improved to 12-0 and notched their 26th straight win dating back to the start of the 2018 season.

FSHS limited the Falcons (9-3) to 154 total yards and recorded a defensive touchdown in the second half on Will Runyan’s 12-yard fumble return.

That upped the Polar Bears’ lead to 31-0 at the time, as Gage Michael threw and rushed for a TD in the first half and Kieshawn Cottingham scored on a 38-yard run in between.

Michael’s TD pass was 13 yards to Camden Longwell and started the scoring.

Michael passed for 172 yards and rushed for 41, while Cottingham added 92 yards on the ground.

Fairmont Senior will face No. 4 Bluefield in a semifinal next week. The contest is a rematch of the Class AA title game each of the last two seasons, with each school having won one.
