Practicing On Thanksgiving Day!

The 2019 high school football season began, officially, the week of August 26th….that was fourteen weeks ago!  And, when the season began that hot week in August, we had 114 teams across the state all striving for several things, including practicing on Thanksgiving Day!  Fast forward to this week, November 25th, and of those 114 teams, only 12 remain!  For this final week before the Super Six, there will be six games played this weekend…..four on Friday night and two more games Saturday Afternoon!  This time next week, only six teams will remain and all six will travel to Wheeling Island Stadium for the 2019 Super Six Championships that will be held Friday and Saturday, December 6th and 7th!

The schedule in the semi-finals this weekend will showcase some outstanding matchups!  In Class AAA, seeds 1, 2, 3 and 4 have all advanced.  The game featuring #3 Spring Valley (11-1) at #2 Cabell Midland (12-0) will be played this Friday night at 7:30 at Knight Stadium in Ona, WV.  The only blemish on the record for the Timber Wolves came back on September 13th when Spring Valley lost at home to Cabell Midland by a final of 28-21.  Over the years, the Knights and the Timber Wolves have met up on the grid iron a total of 24 times and Cabell Midland has won 14 and lost 10.  However, Spring Valley has won 4 of the last 5 meetings!  In the other half of the Class AAA bracket, #4 Parkersburg South (11-1) will make the long trip to the eastern panhandle to battle #1 Martinsburg (12-0) at Coburn Field.  Since these two ball clubs are located so far apart, they have met only four previous times, all coming in the playoffs.  The record between the two programs is even…..Martinsburg claimed victory in 1999 and 2001, and Parkersburg South won in 2002 and 2003.  The victory in 2003 came in the title game when Parkersburg South won their only football championship by a final score of 26-20 over Martinsburg!

In Class AA this weekend, we will have one game played on Friday night and the other on Saturday Afternoon.  The Friday night matchup will feature #4 Bluefield (11-1) at #1 Fairmont Senior (12-0) and this one should be a classic!  This will mark a rematch of the same two teams that have met in the Class AA title game the last two years, with each team winning one each!  Over the years, Bluefield and Fairmont Senior have met up ten (10) times…..and, wouldn’t you know it, Bluefield has won 5 times and Fairmont Senior has won 5 times!  This is the game of the weekend that you should mark on your calendar!  In the other Class AA matchup which will kickoff at 1:30 on Saturday afternoon, #6 Oak Glen (12-0) will travel to #2 Bridgeport (11-1).  This game will mark the first time the Golden Bears and the Indians have met on the football field.

In Class A, both games will be played under those Friday night lights with kickoff scheduled at 7:30.  In what should be a great game, #5 Williamstown (10-2) will be at #1 Doddridge County (12-0) in a matchup that features two teams very familiar with each other.  The Yellow Jackets and the Bulldogs have met a total of 26 times on the football field with Williamstown having won 18 of those 26 games.  However, Doddridge County has won the last two times these two teams met including just four weeks ago when the Bulldogs defeated the Yellow Jackets 20-7!  In the other Class A matchup #10 Wheeling Central Catholic (8-4) will be on the road to take on #3 Pendleton County (11-1)!  The Maron Knights may just be the hottest team in the playoff field as they have gone on the road in the previous two weeks and upset #7 Tolsia 13-12 and #2 Ritchie County 13-0!  Pendleton County has held serve the last two weeks knocking off #14 Moorefield 26-7 and #6 St. Marys 13-2.  Over the years, Wheeling Central and Pendleton County have met three other times and the Maroon Knights have won all three.

Just a reminder, the final H.S. GAMENIGHT show of the season can be heard this Saturday night from 6p to 8p as we will have a complete look at all six games being played this weekend, plus we will take a look at the matchups for this year’s Super Six!  So join Dave Jecklin and me this Saturday night at 6p on over 40 great radio stations around the state and @wvmetronews.com!
