Williamstown hits 13 triples, wins battle of unbeatens vs. PCHS

WILLIAMSTOWN, W.Va. — Williamstown connected on 13 3-pointers as they handed Parkersburg Catholic their first loss of the season, 65-44.

The Yellowjackets broke open a close game at halftime with a strong second half defensive effort. Williamstown outscored the Crusaders 31-14 in the final 16 minutes.

“At halftime we talked about putting some pressure on them,” said Williamstown head coach Scott Sauro. “We got a great effort from a lot of different people. We played nine to ten guys and they all came in and they really contributed. I thought it was a good defensive effort by our guys in the second half to hold a team that is that good to 14 points.

The Yellowjackets closed the first half on a 7-0 run to take a 34-30 lead into the locker room. They outscored Parkersburg Catholic 15-6 in the third quarter and the Crusaders trailed by double digits for the rest of the game.

Xavier Caruthers led the Yellowjackets with 22 points. He connected on five 3-pointers.

“We really try to get good balance,” Sauro said. “Some days your perimeter game is going a little bit better and today was one of those days. We were fortunate to hit them.”

Eli Inman added 14 points for Williamstown while Samuel Cremeans added 10. Pat Copen led the Crusaders (5-1) with 22 points. Xavier Collie scored 11 and Jeb Boice chipped in with 10.

With the win, Williamstown (9-0) remains one of six unbeaten boys teams in West Virginia.

“There’s definitely room for improvement,” Sauro said. “We need to get a little bit better defensively. Offensively we were a little uneven at times. We’re going to work on those things and try to get better.”
