Bancroft’s 31 points key Titans to win over Doddridge County

Gilmer County’s Trinity Bancroft scored 31 points in a 68-51 win at Doddridge County.

WEST UNION, W.Va. — Thanks in large part to her 11-point opening quarter, Gilmer County’s Trinity Bancroft went into halftime Tuesday at Doddridge County leading all players with 13 points.

Yet with the Titans in front of the Bulldogs by two at the break, they couldn’t afford for Bancroft to become complacent. Fortunately for Gilmer County, Bancroft was anything but over the final two quarters.

Bancroft scored the first seven points of the third quarter among her 18 in the second half to finish with 31 and help the Titans create separation in a 68-51 win.

“Trinity played a great offensive game tonight and her defense looked a lot better in the second half,” Titans’ head coach Amy Chapman said. “That helped. She did a really good job with her decision making on offense.”

Bancroft made 8-of-11 shots after the intermission, including a corner three-pointer ten seconds into the third quarter and two layups that stretched the Gilmer County lead to 39-30.

The Titans (12-3) led by six later in the third when they got consecutive baskets in the lane from Bancroft, Eve Mohr and Carrah Ferguson, which helped them take a 50-40 lead into the fourth.

Doddridge County, meanwhile, committed seven turnovers in the quarter, which went a long way toward its deficit growing by eight points.

“The idea of being that close with the (Class A) No. 5 team in the state, we let the nerves get to us,” Bulldogs’ head coach Lisa Cheeseman said. “We panicked and turned the ball over way too many times. They capitalized and we didn’t.”

Bancroft scored inside early in the fourth to up the Titans’ lead to 58-44, before the Bulldogs (9-6) got back to within 10 on a pair of Bianca Howell layups.

But Bancroft reeled off Gilmer’s next seven points on a triple, a stickback and a layup, the latter of which gave Gilmer a commanding 61-46 advantage.

“Our pressure got to them, especially in the fullcourt,” Chapman said. “When we threw the halfcourt trap at them, they struggled. We got some easy fastbreak opportunities off some steals.

“Offensively, we did a better job not rushing and taking what the defense gave us instead of trying to force a lot.”

Malaysia Morgan added 11 points for the Titans, while Ferguson followed with nine and five assists.

Bianca Howell led Doddridge in defeat with 16 points. Abby McDonough contributed 10.

While the Titans shot better than 60 percent (14-of-23) from the field in the second half, the Bulldogs made only 7-of-28 attempts for 25 percent shooting.

“They played good defense,” Cheeseman said, “but we missed a lot of shots right around the basket.”
