Wheeling Park’s perimeter play key in 67-48 win over University

Wheeling Park’s Shanley Woods penetrates against University.

WHEELING, W.Va. — The hot hand of Asia Roby played a big role in Wheeling Park’s girls basketball team building a 19-point halftime lead against University in Monday’s Ohio Valley Athletic Conference semifinal at WPHS.

When the Hawks made their run to draw closer in the second half, the Patriots turned to Shanley Woods, who scored 17 points over the final two quarters. The performance of both players, who combined for 40 points, allowed Wheeling Park to cruise to a 67-48 win for their third win in as many tries this season against the defending Class AAA runner-up.

“Asia Roby really stepped up, especially in the first half,” Park head coach Ryan Young said. “She was mainly responsible for us building the lead and then kids like Shanley that we depend on to score finished the game out for us.”

Woods and Roby combined for seven points during Park’s 9-2 surge to close the first quarter with a 22-11 lead.

The Patriots (18-2) got consecutive three-pointers from Lindsey Garrison in the second quarter to hold a 28-14 advantage, and a pair of triples from Roby helped make it 34-19 later in the period.

The Patriots took a 42-23 lead into halftime, with Roby leading the way with 14 points and four of her team’s seven three-pointers.

“They’re a good shooting team no question. We didn’t get them off their spots and they shot it well,” UHS head coach David Price said. “That’s definitely the difference in the game.”

University (11-7) got to within 50-38 following Abbie Coen’s baseline jumper late in the third quarter, but Woods responded with six straight points on two triples, allowing Park to lead 56-40 lead entering the fourth.

“We still need to play four full quarters. We played a real good first half and we had a big lead so it kind of changes the way you play,” Young said. “We fell asleep on the defensive end again. But I get when you have that kind of lead that kids get a little complacent.”

Woods scored eight more points in the fourth quarter, preventing the Hawks from getting the deficit inside of 14 over the final eight minutes.

Woods led all players with 26 points, while Roby finished with 14. The duo combined for eight of Park’s 11 triples, with Garrison accounting for the other three.

In addition to outscoring UHS 33-9 from behind the arc, the Patriots made 16-of-18 free throws.

Mallory Napolillo led the Hawks with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Ashten Boggs added 12 points and eight boards in defeat.
