Hurricane community says goodbye to Will Washburn

TEAYS VALLEY, W.Va. — The Hurricane community turned out Saturday afternoon to remember teenager Will Washburn and show support for his family.

Will Washburn died April 27.

Washburn, a student at Hurricane Middle School, died April 27 after suffering a cardiac episode.

A unique memorial service was held Saturday at Liberty Square in Teays Valley. Because of the pandemic, many community members sat in their vehicles or just outside them to listen to several special speakers including Will’s parents.

The service was broadcast on a special FM frequency and on Facebook.

The vehicles then lined up and drove past the family expressing their condolences.

“People wanted to be around Will, people wanted to do stuff for Will,” Todd Rigney, one of the organizers of Saturday’s service told MetroNews. “When he walked down the halls with his smile, it just changed the attitude of all those students. I would venture to say he was the most popular kid in school.
