DHHR reports 93rd COVID-19 death

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state Department of Health and Human Resources reported Saturday that the state now has 93 COVID-19-related deaths.

The 82-year-old man lived in Greenbrier County.

“Our sincere condolences are extended to this man’s family as we grieve the passing of another West Virginian,” DHHR Secretary Bill Crouch said.

The state recorded an additional 21 cases Saturday.

The test results will be back early next week for tests given Friday and Saturday in Cabell, Randolph, Mingo and Hancock counties.  Just short of 1,500 tests were administered.

Kanawha-Charleston Health Department Director Dr. Sherri Young continued to raise concerns Saturday about cases connected with out of state vacation.

“I am alarmed by the recent increase in cases,” Young said. “I know people want to go on vacation, but we can’t let down our guard about COVID-19. This disease has not gone away just because we may be tired of hearing about it. Whether you’re home or traveling, please continue to stay at least six feet away from people, avoid crowds, wear your face mask while you’re out in public, and wash your hands frequently.”

Kanawha County now has 25 cases connected to Myrtle Beach vacations.

The Greenbrier Sporting Club told its members Saturday a worker there had tested positive for the virus. The worker was not showing symptoms.

Sporting Club Director of Operations Allen Willis informed club members of the situation in a letter:

“We do not believe that this employee has had any recent direct contact with Members. Out of an abundance of caution, all Lodge, Summit and Pool Food and Beverage operations are temporarily suspended. We will begin a thorough sanitation and cleaning and are following local and state guidance with regard to the duration of the temporary suspension of services and additional testing of those who were in contact with this employee. We will reopen as soon as it is deemed to be safe to do so.

We have been and remain in constant contact with local and state health officials and are following all guidance provided by them.

During this temporary suspensions of services all members are encouraged to use dining services at The Greenbrier or local dining establishments.”
