Marion County health officials warn of increasing coronavirus cases

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Marion County health leaders are urging people to take necessary steps for reducing the spread of the coronavirus as cases statewide continue increasing.

The Marion County Health Department has confirmed 83 cases so far in July.

Health department Administrator Lloyd White told MetroNews affiliate WAJR-AM the rise in cases is likely connected to people not wearing face coverings and social distancing.

“Until we see everyone doing the right thing we’re going to see cases, in my opinion, continue to escalate,” he said. “Unfortunately, I think we’re going to see deaths that we absolutely could have prevented.”

The statewide mask ordinance requiring face coverings outside of the home has been in effect for two weeks. White said data should reflect the benefits of such policy given time.

“I think it’s a little bit early to really have enough data to say it’s effective,” he said.

Bars have been closed in Monongalia County since last Monday. White noted the order affects numbers in surrounding areas because people will instead travel to establishments outside of the county, increasing their chances of getting the virus.
