Neal Brown outlines changes to defensive coaching staff

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Former WVU defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel has been elevated from analyst to position coach in a defensive staff shuffle caused by the departure of Vic Koenning last week.

Casteel returned to WVU in March as a defensive analyst but he will now coach the outside linebackers. The Paden City native was part of Rich Rodriguez’s initial coaching staff in Morgantown and he remained on staff through Dana Holgorsen’s first season in 2011. Casteel has coached for 33 seasons, 27 as a defensive coordinator.

Defensive line coach Jordan Lesley will now oversee the front end of the WVU defensive, while former WVU safety Jahmile Addae will handle the back end of the defense. Dontae Wright will coach the safeties and Jeff Koontz will coach the inside linebackers and oversee the special teams unit.

“Given the timing and unique circumstances surrounding the pandemic, we are going to divide responsibilities and use a committee approach,” head coach Neal Brown said. “We are promoting Jeff Casteel to an on-the-field position and know he will be a great contributor. We have an outstanding group of defensive coaches, and I have the utmost confidence in their ability.”
