New Timberline Mountain preparing for preview weekend

TUCKER COUNTY, W.Va. — For the first time, skiers and snowboarders will be welcomed to the newly-upgraded Timberline Mountain in Tucker County this weekend.

Lifts open at 10 a.m. Saturday for what’s being called a “preview weekend” at the resort site that is now owned by Perfect North Slopes, a company that has invested millions of dollars in improvements after buying the former Timberline Four Seasons Resort out of bankruptcy.

“We have made enough snow over the last week that we wanted to get people out enjoying the outdoors as soon as possible,” said Tom Price, director of operations for Timberline Mountain.

“We have a little more work to do on our lodge renovation as well as a few other things on the hill, but we didn’t want a good weekend to go to waste.”

On both Saturday, Dec. 12 and Sunday, Dec. 13, operating hours were scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Open terrain was to include Salamander and White Lightning, two top-to-bottom runs, along with White Out, Mid-Mountain Crossroad and First Flurries, which is the new beginner area.

Two chairlifts were also going to be running.

“This will give people the opportunity to get their legs back under them from a long summer and start getting some turns in for the season,” Price said.

The goal was to announce a full opening day for the season at Timberline Mountain within the next week.

Trails were last open at Timberline in Feb. 2019 when the resort abruptly closed.

The property’s previous owners filed for bankruptcy in April 2019, the culmination of years of financial issues.

Last November, Perfect North Slopes, based in Indiana, bought Timberline for $2.2 million following a bid transfer after a bankruptcy auction.

The deal closed in December 2019.

Timberline did not open at all for the 2019-2020 winter season to allow time for the ongoing resort-wide renovations that could add up to more than $12 million in improvements.

“We got a lot done in a short period of time and we’re very, very proud of it,” Price said.

That work has been done in a pandemic and COVID-19 protocols will be in place throughout the winter season at Timberline Mountain and elsewhere.

Snowshoe Mountain Resort in Pocahontas County opened last weekend.

Saturday is opening day at Winterplace Resort in Raleigh County.

Not far from Timberline in Tucker County, the ski area for Canaan Valley Resort was tentatively scheduled to open on Dec. 19.

As of Thursday, no opening date had been set for Oglebay Resort in Ohio County.
