Spring Valley grad Doug Nester transfers from Virginia Tech to WVU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — WVU head coach Neal Brown has scored a major recruiting victory by bringing a state native to Morgantown. Former Spring Valley standout lineman Doug Nester is transferring from Virginia Tech to West Virginia.

Nester played in eleven games and made ten starts at right guard as a true freshman with the Hokies in 2019. He was named to the Pro Football Focus College All-Freshman Honorable Mention list that season. As a sophomore, Nester remained a starter, splitting time between guard and tackle. He was named an ACC Player of the Week for his performance in Tech’s 40-14 win over Boston College on October 17.

Nester was a three-time WVSWA All-State selection in his years at Spring Valley, leading the Timberwolves to Class AAA state final appearances from 2016-2018. He won the Stydahar Award in his senior season, which is presented to the state’s top lineman.

At WVU, Nester will be reunited with high school teammate Wyatt Milum and Graeson Malashevich. Milum is a 5-star recruit and is one of the nation’s most heavily recruited offensive linemen in the Class of 2021. Malashevich was a classmate of Nester at Spring Valley. He was the WVU holder this season and saw time at receiver as well. Nester could play alongside 2019 Stydahar Award winner and Fairmont Senior graduate Zach Frazier on the Mountaineer offensive front.

Nester originally committed to play at Ohio State back in August of 2017, but he changed his commitment to play for the Hokies three days before the national signing period opened in February of 2019. He was a 4-star recruit and played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Virginia Tech’s season is complete. The Hokies elected not to participate in a bowl game after finishing at 5-6. The Mountaineers are scheduled to host VaTech on September 18, 2021.
