MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A new chapter of the Hotel Morgan began Tuesday when Gov. Jim Justice, local leaders and investors cut a ribbon marking the end of a $15 million renovation project.
The Thrasher Group worked on the project, which included restoration efforts and upgrades to rooms and dining options. Bedrooms, meeting spaces and ballrooms were redone, while the historic hotel maintains its original 1925 look. Charlestowne Hotels will manage the hotel’s day-to-day operations.
“Our vision is to simply give back to the community, partner with the community and in doing so we believe the community will once again support Hotel Morgan,” general manager Robert Mickey said.
Mickey noted some of the hotel’s 95 years of history was recovered during the renovation as well.
“Meeting and business cards, campaign cards from back in the ’30s and ’40s behind walls,” he said. “We found some dollar bills that were from the 1930s.”
The hotel is the recipient of state tax credits through the Tourism Development Act program. Recent applicants represent more than $250 million in investment in West Virginia’s tourism industry.
