Jefferson ‘in custody’ death under investigation

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. — A Jefferson County man died after allegedly assaulting an elderly woman early Saturday morning.

It happened April 24th just after 1:30 a.m. in a home on Torrey Pines court bear Charles Town.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office tells The Panhandle News Network they were called for an assault in progress. The caller had told dispatch a 34-year-old male tenant was attacking the caller’s 80-year-old wife, punching her in the face and knocking her to the ground. The caller was requesting medical help for his wife.

The suspect was described as as a white male with a thick beard and weighing about 400 pounds. Police were told he was walking around naked outside of the house.

When deputies arrived, they found the victim on the ground and were informed the attacker was in the basement.

The deputies reportedly gave numerous verbal commands to the man which he failed to comply with. The suspect then advanced towards them, and was tased without effect then reportedly ripped out the darts and kept advancing toward the officers. He was tased two more times without effect.

Deputies report eventually being able to grab his arm and place him on the ground. They handcuffed him but he continued to resist. He lost consciousness and deputies called EMS, who arrived about a minute later and administered care. The man, whose identity has not been released, was later declared dead. An investigation is now underway.
